Alassio

The town, province of Savona, Liguria Italy , was founded in the 10th century AD, and according to the tradition named after Adelasia, the daughter of German Emperor Otto I. In the 11th century the area was under the control of the Benedictine monks of Gallinara and later under the town of Albenga. As a protection against pirate raids the town was surrounded by walls in 1521. Soon after, it came under the control of the Genoese Republic. In 1815 the Congress of Vienna suppressed the Republic of Genoa and assigned Liguria to the Sardinia Kingdom. In the 1960's, when the so-called "economic boom" in Italy was at its highest, Alassio was with Portofino and Sanremo a fashionable destination of the jet-set people. In those years local painter Mario Berrino started the "Muretto di Alassio" a kind of Italian version of Hollywood House of Fame.

San Remo

Situated in western Liguria, the town is especially famous for two sports occasions and one musical event. Sanremo hosts the annual San Remo Music Festival of the Italian Song, the Sanremo Car Rally Race part of the FIA World Rally Championship, and is the arrival of the classical cycling race Milan-Sanremo, an etape of the cycling World Cup. It was also in 1896 the death place of Alfred Nobel.

Ventimiglia

Ventimiglia, the ancient Roman Album Intimilium or Albintimilium), a frontier fortress, seaport and episcopal see, 94 miles West of Genoa by rail. It was a Roman municipium with an extensive territory, and of some importance under the Empire, but was plundered by the the army of Otho in AD 69.

Cervo

Picturesque ancient town of the Italian Riviera in the province of Imperia, with a fine baroque church overlooking the sea. In the last decades the little town has acquired importance since when in 1964 the International Chamber Music Festival was established here by famous Hungarian violinist Sandor Vegh. The event has been held every summer ever since. Music master classes - Accademia di Cervo - are held in September, and a guitar academy in June.

Bordighera

Situated along the Western Riviera 10 km from the border with France, at the foot of the Maritime Alps which makes the summers always breezy, Bordighera is an explosion of flowers and mediterranean vegetation, with the new tourist resort along the seafront and the ancient borough perched on the promontory of Cape Sant'Ampelio.

Savona

Savona is a seaport in the Ligurian Riviera di Ponente on the Mediterranean Sea, and used to be one of the chief seats of the Italian iron industry, with iron-works and foundries, shipbuilding, railway workshops, engineering shops, brass foundry.

Albenga

This important seaside resort along the "Riviera di Ponente" (Western Riviera) is situated at the estuary of the Centa river, and was strategically important since Roman times, being on the Via Aurelia, one of the main Roman roads. The commune includes also the Natural Reserve of the island of Gallinara, where existed a monastery dedicated to St Martin from Tours. Albenga occupies one of the very few plain areas of Liguria, where an intensive agriculture is practised, as well as a rich production of flowers.

Finale Ligure

This small commune of the Western Ligurian Riviera consists actually of 3 different centers, Finale Marina, along the sea with a fine seafront of palm trees, the more recent tourist development, Finale Pia, higher on the coast which is the older part, Varigotti, an ancient Saracen settlement also along the sea, and Finalborgo (or Finale Borgo) the early medieval borough with the beautiful castles of Castlegovone and San Giovanni.

Rapallo

Rapallo is part of the Tigullio Gulf and is located between Portofino and Chiavari, 24 km (15 mi) east of the city of Genoa at the innermost point of the Gulf of Rapallo, and is included in the Parco Naturale Regionale di Portofino. Rapallo has been known for its climate that made it over the years the winter residence of preference for most of the affluent Italians living in the North West of Italy. Its proximity to the coast makes for mild winters where people can enjoy easy strolls on the sunny promenade and the golfers can enjoy one of the oldest courses in Italy, an 18 hole course founded in 1930 and open all year around.

Portofino

Portofino is a small city located on the Italian Riviera, considered to be among the most beautiful Mediterranean ports, and is a popular tourist destination. Portofino has even been recreated in detail at the Portofino Bay Resort at Universal Orlando Resort in Orlando, Florida. Aubrey Herbert( 1880-1923) was one of the more famous Englishmen to maintain a villa at Portofino.

Genova

Genoa (Italian Genova), the capital of its province and of the Liguria region, is an important seaport in northern Italy, the first Italian commercial port, with also two passenger docks, Ponte dei Mille and Ponte Andrea Doria, and the second port in the Mediterranean after Marseille, France. Its name is probably Ligurian, meaning "knee", i.e. "angle", from its geographical position. Alternatively, the name has been claimed to derive from Latin Janua ("gate"), the two-headed god Janus. Genoa was the birthplace of Christopher Columbus (although his birthplace is disputed between Italy and France), admiral Andrea Doria, violinist Niccolò Paganini and Italian patriot Giuseppe Mazzini.
